"Film and Fieldwork"

Workshop der AG Visuelle Anthropologie der DGV

There has been a strong emphasis on ethnographic filmmaking within Visual Anthropology in the past years. Visual means as research methods and as tools to reflect the ethnographic endeavour have been far less discussed. We want to take a closer look at the state of current visual research practices within the discipline and give an opportunity to present and talk about different methods which form an integral part of the fieldwork process (e.g. dialogical and participatory methods, picture-based interviews and analysis, etc.). Furthermore we will deal with the potential of film to tackle with the implications of doing fieldwork.

The French anthropologist and filmmaker Stéphane Breton (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris) will present his latest film A Silent Summer (2005) and two of his earlier works from Irian Jaya (New Guinea) Them and Me (Eux et moi, 2001) and Le Ciel dans un jardin (2003), in which he reflects on fieldwork methods and his role as an ethnographer.
